The AX Hybrid Smartwatch

Analogue or hybrid watches are classic looking timepieces that combine the look and functionality of a traditional watch with abilities that are evident in today's smartwatches. Baselworld 2018 has been around since the 1970s, but smartwatches have finally reached the point that they're, well, smart. Some are quite basic, like pressing one button to turn your smartphone's music volume up or down. Smartwatches do come in touchscreen-less form.

If you like a little bling on your wristwatch or preferred the subdued, classic stylings of something more traditional, there are Fossil Q smartwatches for that dress your wrist right up with a little rose gold, stainless steel or leather band, or look for Roman numeral indices accented with sparkly crystal for a pop of bedazzled charm.

When Pebble moved to the 2.x firmware, they dropped support for Android 2.3 and stopped updating the old phone app. The Misfit Command smartwatch is capable of tracking the users steps and calories. In a marketplace of mass variety, it's become difficult to narrow down the best smartwatches worth owning.

A classic hybrid that looks like a watch, but acts like a smartwatch. They get an analog wristwatch that has some smart features which can be used without a touchscreen display. But what about those consumers who don't quite understand the smartwatch, the ones who would like to have some connectivity in their devices but still value their existing valuables?

I wonder what value that automatic movement actually brings to the table anyway - if what you want is a smartwatch, my feeling is that you should just spring for a smartwatch and not worry yourself or feel guilty about the lack of a balance spring inside.

Wear your watch at night or put it under your pillow to record your sleep. The hybrid aspect makes it easy to access some Smartwatch features without having a second phone on your wrist. The stainless steel strap (gym-goers may opt for the leather or rubber versions available) of this watch holds a decidedly elegant watchface in place, which is shielded by scratchproof sapphire crystal glass, waterproof to 3 atmospheres.

There are chronograph-like pushers that are used to control the smartwatch functions (and to remotely control certain smartphone functions like your camera), while the dial actually shows the day, date, and a customizable 0-100 sub-register on the dial.

You can also use these watches with an iPhone, but you lose some capabilities. Typically, hybrid watches try and keep things simple and only dish out the basics in terms of activity tracking, but Vivomove HR is different. You won't see full touchscreen displays like you get on Android Wear watches or the Apple Watch You certainly won't have to deal with a couple of days of battery life, that's for sure.

(You can use the Gear Sport with non-Samsung phones, but doing so requires that you install at least four apps.) The Gear Sport handles all the casual notification and message-triage functions of a smartwatch about as well as our top pick—with the exception of voice transcription—but it adds heart-rate monitoring, GPS tracking, swim tracking, and built-in reminders to move throughout the day.

As of this writing, neither hybrid smartwatch is available on Michael Kors's website, though the brand's activity trackers and Android-based smartwatches are listed for sale. Watch faces for Android Wear exist in the kind of state Android phone apps were in during their earliest days—all over the place, so good luck searching.
